Rick Stein's French Odyssey
Price: £11.99
Rick Stein's recent television series, where he floated down the Canal du Midi through Languedoc Roussillon has supposedly help lift the property and touism market. We can understand why, because the series, and this book that accompanies it, brings out the best of Languedoc's peasant fare. This isn't the cuisine the French like to associate with France (chi-chi fare decorating a place) - but rather Rick has focued in on the really simple country food that Languedoc is best at. The recipes are easy to make, and you'll find all the ingredients in local markets.
Extremely Pale Rose
Price: £11.21
Extremely Pale Rose is a richly entertaining and informative account of the travels of Jamie, his wife Tanya and their ebullient friend Peter Swift, as they take up this challenge. Giving up their lives in London, they quickly discover an unfortunate truth - the French won't treat rose or their quest seriously. All admirers of Peter Mayle's A Year in Provence and Bon Appetit!, and Carol Drinkwater's Olive Farm series will be absorbed by this book which is anything but a pale imitation.

A wider exploration of the region's finest produce for the table distracts him further. From season to season, Patrick's quest uncovers the secrets of olive oil and salt production, the mysteries of Ricard and the Roquefort caves, the miracle of the sparkling Perrier spring.

Goose Fat and Garlic: Country Recipes from South-West France
Price: £7.69
It's a delightful book and one which I feel is on par with Elizabeth David. There are no photographs... but with writing like this, is there any need? Each recipe shouts authenticity.
Cooking of South West France

This cookbook presents a selection of classic dishes from South West France. The recipes make use of ingredients which the region has in abundance, such as wild mushrooms, truffles, duck, walnuts, chestnuts, hams, cheeses and wines.

The Da Vinci Code
Price: £4.89
Dan Brown masterfully concocts an intelligent and lucid thriller that marries the gusto of an international murder mystery with a collection of fascinating esoterica culled from 2,000 years of Western history - with much of the action based in cathar country in Languedoc.
The Perfect Heresy: The Life and Death of the Cathars
Price: £7.19
Inspired by his travels in France, Canadian historian Stephen O'Shea's tale of Languedoc's Cathars and their destruction is empathetic, evocative and sometimes refreshingly witty. The book's recreations of the "medieval phantasmagoria" of siege warfare are superb at bringing the medieval world alive.
Revenge and Regret
Price: £14.95
Revenge and Regret, a poignant tale of a boy growing up in war time in Languedoc-Roussillon, is based on the true story of the Maquis de Picaussel and on the experiences of the author's friends and neighbours. Luxat, La Bastide and Ste Agathe are fictitious place names, but the events described in the novel are firmly founded on true events which took place here more than 50 years ago.
