Opened about two years ago by the former head chef of ‘La Barbacane”, this restaurant has now won it’s own Michelin star and was packed on the Friday lunchtime that we visited, always a good sign. It has a very contemporary design, including monogrammed plates, cutlery stands and slabs of butter and piped birdsong in the toilets (!) and is situated in a modern building beneath ‘La Cite’. The menus attempt to take you through an exploration of your emotions including one entitled ‘Action … Reaction’ where the food is chosen for you. I can’t as yet comment on that as we contented ourselves with the very reasonable €25 fixed price lunch. In truth we were a little bit disappointed with the canapés and petit fours being the highlights for us – the intervening courses appeared to be trying too hard to impress, with more emphasis on look than on the eventual taste. I would love to know other people’s opinions and will certainly give it and the other menus another chance, when I’ve saved up a bit.

I have since been back here on 2 further occasions and had a fabulous time. The terrace is a lovely place for a summer lunch and the food is outstanding. A perfect place for a celebration.

Last weekend we took some friends for a meal as it was a wonderful sunny Sunday afternoon. Arrived in Bouzigues and is was 'heaving' - the locals love their seafood! With no booking we worried that we would never find a table. However Julie, which is situated right on the water front near the village, were so kind. They moved other guests who did not need such a large table and made us feel really welcome. We sat on the second floor with a wonderful view over the Etang and the oyster beds. The restaurant (like the village) was very busy, but our waitress was charming and the food arrived quickly. We ate various starters, oysters, moules gratinee, gravadlax and fish soup - all were excellent. For our main course three of us went for the seafood risotto (excellent) and one grilled Salmon. This was washed down with a local Viognier and coffee. An excellent meal in a perfect setting and good value too - about €40 a head in total.

On a visit to the Noilly Prat factory in September our lunch here was much enjoyed by the four of us (Alyson, Bryan, Paul my husband and of course myself). Starters of Tartare du Salmon with Citron Dressing, Seafood Salade and Chevre Cassis with Onion Confit all served with lots and lots and lots of very fresh lettuce was much enjoyed. Mains of Cuttlefish Stew with Pilau Rice could have been spiced up, but was tasty, the Lasagne excellent and Fruits of the Sea very good. Nice fresh bread kept coming though the salad dressing could have been different to that used on the starters. The Wine a Picpoul d Pinet - Produce Medal Winner 2007 was excellent also. We all finished off with Il Flotant or Ice Cream. Coffee finished off our superb repast overlooking this tiny port, the wine harvest tractors and trailers plying their way to the Co-op on the opposite side of the port, made for a wonderful day out. We shall return here again.

We have visited this pizzeria on many occasions and have always found the pizzas to be very good - wafer thin bases and imaginative toppings. If pizza is not your thing, they also serve pasta, steak, magret for example. The staff are warm and friendly and in the summer months you can eat outside in the square which has wonderful views across the vineyards. Open all year round.

I have a house in Servian and use la Panouille a lot. Marie-jo is unfailingly cheerful and accomodationg and the food is good. Its also open on a Monday evening, when most other restaurants seem to be closed.

The charm of this restaurant is undeniable. With a view over the marina towards the sea and the beach, you feel you are in the heart of yachting country. Fabian, the owner is a charming host, and his team of efficient and friendly service staff make eating here a real pleasure. The speciality of the restaurant is seafood, and on a weekday you can get an exquisite 2-course lunch for 14Eur. Elegantly presented and divine to eat, the chef pays careful attention to enhancing his fresh produce with a delicate mixture of herbs, spices and accompanying ingredients. It's a busy place so do think to book.

This is a quite small restaurant, opposite the church in Lamalou-les-Bains. The owner, Gilles Aubert, prepares the menus and the food to a high standard. Gilles great-grandparents had a grocer's shop on the premises from 1900 to 1936. The quality of the food and the warmth of welcome are excellent. There are several menus to choose from, the cheapest being €13 and is available at lunchtimes and in the evenings (except at week-ends). The most expensive "degustation" menu is €55 including different wines with each course. Gilles is very attentive and friendly. He also runs cookery courses, which are very well received. The restaurant has seating for about twenty and there is an outside eating area in an enclosed terrace for the summer. Strongly recommended.

If you are lucky you live in the beautiful valley of the Orb. If you are very lucky you live in Colombières-sur-Orb only a few hundred metres away from the Auberge des Gorges de Madale, set back in the trees from the D908 on the right as you approach the village from the direction of Bédarieux. Don't be put off by the fact that the auberge looks as though it has only recently been constructed. Within it there is a chef with a touch of genius, Stéphan Azema. The menu is set and changes every two weeks. For €24 you have four courses, wine, coffee and "mignardises" included which is excellent value. When I went the menu started with a "velouté'" of rabbit with cauliflower and garlic mayonnaise, an unusual combination that worked well. To follow mussels cooked with onion and a "sabayon" of cèpes topped with cheese which was outstanding even for one for whom mussels are by no means a favourite. The main course was artichoke heart stuffed with duck and accompanied by roast sprouts. Finally that well known French pudding "After eight" which turned out to be a peppermint mousse cleverly encased in chocolate and served with ice crem and "calisson". A Banyuls was offered on the house with cofffee and home made "mignardises". Both red and white wine are provided in carafes that are never allowed to be empty, and the quality of the St.Chinian wine is excellent. It is clear that Stéphan takes enormous care and delight in preparing the food and pleasing his guests. So if you want something out of the ordinary reserve a table at the Auberge des Gorges de Madale and prepare to be surprised and delighted. Note, they do not take Credit Cards so come armed with cash or a cheque. You can now check the following website to see what is currently on the menu -

At last a local bar/restaurant that I will want to return to and not just because it is local to us! Jean-Marc the patron is also the chef and sets the tone at his cosy establishment. The welcome was genuine and the atmosphere friendly. This is not your typical village bar, they also run the village shop, as this closed recently. There is also a shady terrace, set back from the road, where you can sip your vino and let the day slip by. They usually offer a set menu of three courses, which includes wine at lunch only. The is price a very reasonable €11.50 each. The day we went, there was an excellent beef pottage to start, followed by a choice of steak (excellent), fried chicken coated with lemon bread crumbs or fish brochette, all with saute potatoes and veg. The puds we all home made too. This is not haute cusine, how could it be at these prices! But it is good, honest, tasty food - all of which is cooked to order by Jean-Marc. Open for only lunch Tuesday to Thursday and both lunch and supper on Friday & Saturday. They also do a very popular 'fish & chip' evening every 1st Thursday of the month. It is recommended that you book for evening meals.

A former garden centre, this restaurant is large, airy and well-lit. A substantial barbecue outside caters for a sizeable shady al fresco area. The staff welcome you warmly and sincerely - no false bonhomie here or snobby attitude, and the place is packed, as a result, at lunch times towards the end of the week with locals and business people in search of interesting food in stylish, pleasant surroundings. Lunch time prices include 2 dishes for 15Eur or 3 for 19Eur. They also off a green salad, main dish and dessert in one go for those in a hurry (15Eur) at lunchtime. Recommended for the warmth of the staff, the tasty, interesting food, and the peaceful surroundings.

Olivier Bontemps (now there's a name for a chef) is after his Michelin star we reckon and, my oh my, is he a rising star. If you're brave, choose the "Ballade" menu and let him choose for you. The wines as well if you like. Three courses become seven or eight as exquisite "amuse-bouche" (mouth-tempters) arrive - 3 mussels in the lightest imaginable curried sauce, a tiny glass layered with beetroot mousse and basil. His butcher is, patently, the best on the planet and his perfectly-cooked meat is served with talk-stopping showmanship. No problem really as conversation in this small restaurant is limited to, "Oooh, aah, Oh God that's good" and "How does he do that?' The decor is chillily awful but the food takes you to another planet. If you want to book this restaurant you MUST book way in advance. Still ridiculously cheap €50 - €60 per head, but will go through the roof when this star gets his star. Reviewed by Le Couvent, Roujan

Finding decent restaurants in Bouziques can be tricky - the tourist trade has ensured that most of the town's establishments offer fried rubbish at high prices. But Café de Bouziques is a glorious exception. The restaurant itself is beautifully decorated - 'eclectic chic' - with lots of bright colours, funky lights and paintings mixed with some tasteful antiques. The staff are very friendly - and I suspect mostly gay. We sat in the back courtyard, under the dappled shade of acacia trees, with subtle jazz music playing. The food was very good. I ordered scallops - which were perfectly cooked. The 'taureau' (a traditional favourite in the Camargue) was excellent. Roast chicken with potatoes Dauphinois was very tasty (it was one of the cheaper options). Warm oysters with artichoke caviar was also very tasty. All in all - tasty, inventive cuisine without any of the formality that so often accompanies it. The desert of raspberries, chocolate fudge sauce, biscuits and mascapone was a true triumph.

A superb restaurant in a really lovely (though slightly touristy) village. Run by a young couple, it avoids much of the fustiness of many nice French restaurants. Beautiful Provençal decor mixes with inventive and delicious dishes. The courtyard is especially nice to eat in. The staff are very friendly. Book - because it gets very full with locals who know how lovely it is...

A superb find in the beautiful village of Aigueze, just on the border with Provence. The food is of a very high quality and highly inventive - with slightly asiatic touches here and there. The restaurant is in a vaulted stone cave beneath the village tower. Nicely decorated - with an earthy, Provencale feel and ambient jazz in the background. Friendly, efficient service.

Located on the ring road just outside the city walls of the Bastide Saint Louis, this marvelously atmospheric restaurant occupies a former 18th century stable. A pretty, shady courtyard lends itself well to summer dining, while inside, the wooden features and olde-worlde vibe provide comfort on cooler days. Weekday lunch menus from €15, or set menus at €23 and €30 at all times. A charming, friendly place where you can eat well without having to dress up. Website: www.restaurantlecurie.fr
