The village of Poilhes is divided in half by the pleasantly meandering Canal du Midi. The house is in the oldest half of the village, and seconds away from the canal and two lovely restaurants. A small store and a daily bread truck serve the village, while complete shopping is five minutes away in the town of Capestang with its supermarket and larger selection of shops and 2 weekly markets.
If you are feeling energetic, there is a free municipal tennis court just a couple of minutes walk away from the house.
This is the ideal location to provide a relaxing holiday base, whilst being within easy reach of local attractions and activities. The Mediterranean coast is 20 minutes drive, Montpellier, the thriving capital of the Languedoc with its international airport is 1 hour away by car.
This lovely home at the end of a tiny lane is just a few steps from the Canal du Midi in this beautiful listed village.
The accommodation is on 2 floors and traditional terracotta tiled floors are throughout the house.
On the ground floor is a fully equipped open-plan kitchen with fridge freezer, oven, hobs and washing machine, leading to the living/dining room with wood beamed ceiling, a comfortable sofa, table and 4 chairs. There is also a shower room with separate shower, basin and WC.
Upstairs are two connecting double bedrooms, each with a double bed. French doors in the first bedroom lead to the large, completely private terrace, which overlooks the roof of the old village château. This bedroom also has a loft with skylight and a single bed. The loft/mezzanine, accessible by ladder, would suit a child over 10 years old or a young adult.
The house has been tastefully furnished, with comfort being a priority. All linens (pure cotton sheets and towels) are provided and included in the rental. There is a CD/radio player available if you wish to bring your favourite music. A good selection of CDs and books are also provided.
Terrace leading from the main bedroom.
Free parking on the road outside.
Fifteen minutes east of Poilhes is Beziers where you can stroll through the famous Friday Flower Market and Cathedral, and 20 minutes from Poilhes are some of the most enticing beaches in the Mediterranean.
A half hour's drive south are the Roman ruins and the cathedral of Narbonne. Just outside Narbonne one can visit the magnificently restored Cistercian monastery of Fontfroide, where an incident which sparked the first Albigensian Crusade was reputed to have happened.
For those with an interest in the Middle Ages, there are the Cathar castles such as Minerve, situated between two deep gorges, and Carcassonne, an intact Medieval city and the site of many an historical film.
One of the most diverse regions of France, the Languedoc offers mountains, lakes, rivers and beautiful stretches of coastline; major towns and fairytale citadels.
Languedoc is one of the most prolific wine-producing areas of France and a happy afternoon can be spent touring the many vineyards and tasting the local produce.
