Another comment from our poll...

It's not so much the tax evasion but avoiding social charges. There is a grey area of legality where it is possible to work in France and pay the local taxes but still pay British National Insurance contributions. This is completely taking advantage of both systems - you are paying the lowest possible charges in both counts and benefiting from the better health service in France.
Another loop hole exists where a retired teacher I know of is working in the UK and so declaring her tax there but is resident in France. As a retiree there are no social charges to pay. This is supposedly legal, but I wonder for how much longer. |

Note that social charges are only free as a British retiree resident in France - if you are in receipt of the State Pension.
If you receive a pension (eg early retirement or ill health) but are not yet receiving the State Pension, then you still have to pay Social Charges.
And be careful, you will often be told that it is free for you by CPAM representatives, and not pay for a while. Then the Main Centre, when checking your details, notice - and you have to back-pay.
Every year when we complete our forms, we are told we should not be paying even though we know we should! And each year they get back to us and tell us that, sorry, but we should. We always put the money aside now!
