The town itself is a little down-in-the-mouth. It's a big centre for Algerian emigres who fought on the side of the French in the Algerian war. Subsequently, unemployment is quite high and the town isn't particularly wealthy.
That said, a new mayor is said to have reversed much of the corruption of the old regime and is bringing investment and new life to the area. Lodeve is, somewhat strangely, a huge centre for the arts, and hosts many excellent arts festivals and exhibitions. The recently opened A75 motorway that runs to Paris has also increased Lodeve's allure. As has the influx of house-buying British. As a result, property for sale in the Lodeve area is rising in line with the rest of Languedoc.
If you don't want a house in Lodeve itself, try some of the neighbouring villages. Soubes is very pleasant, as is St Etienne de Gourgas. Lunas is lovely, with its stunning chateau.
Should you not find a property in or near Lodeve that meets your needs on our site, feel free to contact one of the estate agents that operates in the Lodève area.
