Property for sale in the Aude is also close to some of Languedoc's best wine regions - the Minervois and Corbières, as well as the majestic La Cité medieval castle at Carcassonne - with its huge walls and turrets.
Houses in the Aude are still reasonably priced, and cheaper than neighbouring Hérault. Narbonne is a lovely city, still prettier than Béziers to the north, though less exciting than Perpignan to the south. Town houses and apartments in the city have proved very popular in recent years, as the city is quite close to the coast, and benefits from good transport connections.
Along the Aude coast, we'd recommend looking for property in such seaside towns as Gruissan (a pretty village on a hill overlooking the sea), Bages (another hill village, overlooking the Etang), Leucate (rather like an Australian sea-side town) and La Franqui. Avoid Port La Nouvelle, Narbonne Plage and St Pierre. Lezignan-Corbieres is also a little grotty.
Some of the villages of the Aude offer great places to buy property for sale. Along the gorgeous Canal du Midi, try villages such as Trèbes, Bize-Minervois, Pouzols-Minervois, Olonzac, La Redorte, Homps and Capestang. Villages along the Canal-du-Midi are also a good bet, as they are always popular with buyers and renters alike.
Just north of Carcassonne, try looking for houses for sale in Caune-en-Minervois, with its gorgeous abbey. Or Conque-sur-Orbiel.
Carcassonne itself is a nice city. It sits in the shadow of the very famous 'La Cité' castle, but the Ville Bas itself is nice, laid out on a grid, with some nice shops and a lovely central square with a great weekly market. A good place to buy a small apartment in the Aude, perhaps, as the airport, with frequent flights to Stansted, means Carcassonne is a great place for quick weekend get-aways.
South of Carcassonne and the Canal, in the wild Corbières region of the Aude in Languedoc, you'll find Lagrasse, a beautiful medieval village on a river, again with a famous abbey. Or Limoux, where the famous Crémant and Blanquette de Limoux are produced.
Most of the property for sale in Aude will be either village houses - which tend to be stone with wood beams, old 'Maisons de Maitres, in the country, or new villas with pools.
