Most of the villages to the north and east of Alès are very pleasant. The countryside here is gorgeous, quite dramatic and green with plunging river gorges (the gorge of the Vis river is particularly spectacular - especially at Cirque de Navacelles). Don't forget that if you're looking for property in mountainous areas near Ales, gardens can be much steeper - and some houses may not have mains drainage. Over to the east lies Uzès, as beautiful as Alès is ugly, with high property prices to match. But property in or near Ales itself is still very reasonably priced - with village houses, modern villas and 'maisons de maitres' all being sold for just under the Languedoc average.
