Ryanair, EasyJet and FlyBe's prices are usually low - and British Airways' prices have come down a lot too. France's train network is excellent - the trains are on-time and clean and the TGV is the fastest in Europe.

If you don't want to drive through France - but want the use of your car once you're in Languedoc - why not try the French Motor Rail service - you and your car are taken by train, overnight, to Languedoc.

Driving through France is a dream after struggline along British motorways. Generally, they're a lot less congested - but you'll pay quite a lot in motorway tolls to use them.

There are three main routes down to Languedoc -shown on the map. We'd recommend the 2nd, middle route, as it takes you across the new Millau Bridge (shown below).

Where to stay?

If you're looking for a place to stay on your way down - we'd recommend the and chains. They're cheap, pretty cheerful, and Campanile have their own relatively decent restaurants. And with hundreds scattered all over France, you're never far from one. You'll find locations and prices at their websites.

There are a lot of ferry crossing from the UK and Ireland to France. SpeedFerries now offer budget-crossings (they're the RyanAir of ferries) from £19 each way - but don't expect too much comfort or decent food.

We were recently impressed with the level of comfort and the quality of the food on P&O - but expect to pay alot more than SpeedFerries - at between £100-150 normally. SeaFrance seems to combine high prices with low quality.

EuroTunnel is, of course, an alternative to the ferries - but it's not that cheap, at around £150 each way.
