THE AREA
Villasavary is a typical french village with historic associations back to Roman times. The view from the large terrace and garden is truly stunning across the whole valley. Close by Castelnaudary has a great market every Monday and is full of stalls, shops, bars and restaurants. You can walk or cycle the towpaths of the Canal du Midi from there and even take a canal trip to Toulouse. There are many good local restaurants with inexpensive food and fine wines. The local friendly bar/restaurant is just a few minutes leasurely stroll from the house and take-away pizzas are also available in the evenings.
With such a good geographical location, Villasavary is a perfect base for touring the region, with Carcassonne and it's magical walled city just 30 minutes drive away. Toulouse is approx 45 minutes and Andorra (duty free) approx 2 hours. You can visit the Mediterranean beaches of Narbonne in one hour and the costal borders with Spain are a little under 2 hours. The Canal du Midi is well worth exploring as are the historic Cathar castles. The area is excellent for golf, climbing, walking, fishing, cycling, white water rafting, canoeing, go carting, sailing and visiting vineyards. There is a wonderful golf course at Carcassonne, so why not have a golfing holiday! During the winter months you are just over an hour from Mont d'Olmes ski resort and one and a half hours to Ax le Therm which is great for skiing. You are truly spoilt for choice whether young or old. There is also the option of just relaxing on the terrace with a good book and a glass of local wine. When you get too hot you can cool off in the plunge pool.
