La Souqueto (named after the vines that shade both the front and the back of the house) is a sensitively restored and renovated, ancient village house, decorated with a mixture of old and new.
The atmosphere is relaxed and friendly and there is plenty to stimulate body, mind and senses. Breakfast is copious and homemade, often including a seasonal treat. The libraries and studio provide oodles of artistic inspiration and there is a roof terrace and small patio for private relaxation. Rooms are pretty and toiletries, hairdryers and towels are provided. There's free wifi internet access (and a printer) as well as free parking nextdoor.
Evening meals are available by arrangement but there are also two good restaurants within walking distance (one almost nextdoor and one overlooking the river).
The river and small lake (La Garenne) are excellent for safe swimming and are within minutes walk of the house; Canal du Midi at a delightful 15 minute stroll. The village also has horse riding, tennis and petanque, and bicycles and boats are for hire locally.
Located in a Minervois village between Carcassonne and Beziers, La Souqueto is an ideal base for those who want to explore the central Languedoc with its medieval villages, ancient towns and cities, Cathar strongholds and the Canal du Midi.
Beaches (with windsurfing facilities) 35 minutes by car, hiking (both easy and rigorous) and cycling opportunities are all around, whilst the wilds of the Black Mountains are within an hour; Narbonne is 15 mins by car, Carcassonne 40 mins, whilst Perpignan and Montpellier are about an hour's drive away.
Mirepeisset is surrounded by interesting foodie destinations, many of which welcome visitors for guided tours, tastings and demonstrations. Sample different oils and olives at a still-active olive press, 12 unique honeys from a passionate beekeeper, or watch cheese being made at an exquisitely located goatfarm.
The area is of course also scattered with dedicated winemakers that still make their wines by hand, and Narbonne's covered food market rivals the Boqueria in Barcelona.
An hour's drive will also get you to quaint fishing villages, the famous salt pans of Gruissan and the oysterbeds of Bouzigues.
And in winter, the ski slopes are a mere one and a half hours away.
On the artistic side there is also plenty to keep you busy: the famous Patchwork museum in a neighbouring village, or modern art galleries in Bages and Lezignan. Narbonne's modern theatre offers a daily changing list of events ranging from classic and experimental plays to concerts by artist from all around the world.
