St Couat lies close to the river Aude, not far from the Montagne d’Alaric (named after the Visigoth king) and the Corbières to the south and with the Minervois and the Montagne Noire to the north. The village was built partially in a circular form around the chateau, of which the square tower and gate still remain. The church of St Cucufat retains its Romanesque nave and gothic chapels.
St Couat has its own grocery and post office and there are more shops and services in nearby Puicheric (2 km).
