What to do when the sun's not out in Languedoc
With over 300 days of sunshine a year - Languedoc is one of the sunniest regions in all of France. But even in summer, there are days when the clouds roll in, and going to the beach or climbing the walls of some Cathar castle just aren't a great option. So for those few cloudy or rainy days, we've compiled a list of what we feel is the best indoor activities in the region.
Nature-wise, Languedoc's caves (grottes) are a spectacular way to get away from the grey outside. There are also two superb aquariums in the area - both ideal for children, as they're lots of fun and very educational. And in Montpellier, the 'Serre Amazonienne' offers an enclosed Amazonian Rainforest glasshouse - filled with exotic animals and plants.
Bowling is always a great rainy-day outing, and it's pretty popular in Languedoc. If you're interested in wine, the Terra Vinea's subterranean wine theme park is worth a punt.
Some of the Languedoc's cinemas show English-language films in 'Version Orginal' - i.e. not dubbed into French - so they're a good bet on a wet day. As are Montpellier's two indoor malls - should you fancy a spot of shopping.
