When it comes to purchasing homes in France, the Brits out-do every other nationality. It seems we just can’t get enough of French bricks and mortar (or more accurately, old stones and cement: many Brits have a predilection for les vieilles pierres, as the French shorthand for character property goes).
According to a recent report, almost half of foreign owners are not resident in France. “While the volume of French property purchases has remained relatively stable in recent years, growing from 736,000 to 750,000 between 2000 and 2004, the number of purchases by foreign buyers in the same period has increased by 50 per cent, from 35,000 transactions to 53,000,” said www.patrimoine.com
Apparently, the average value of the property acquired by overseas owners was higher than that owned by the French (no surprises there). Foreign owners paid an average 161,000 for an apartment and 170,000 for a house, compared to French budgets of 121,000 and 148,000 respectively for the same kind of property.
