Sete is a very popular place to rent a holiday home rental or gite. An old fishing town, climbing up a hill, it is France's largest fishing port, with all the seafood restaurants (and fishy smells) to go with it. It also hosts an annual 'water jousting' tournament every August.
The town is very lively, and very popular with tourists looking for a fun base from which they can access good beaches. So holiday home rentals and villas in and around Sete can be a little pricey - and tend to be smaller apartments, without gardens or pools.
The best beach nearby is La Corniche, just to the south of the town. It's a huge length of deep sand that, in summer, hosts good restaurants and bars on the beach itself.
Don't forget that the coast of Languedoc is mostly flat (although Sete is on a rare hill) and, thanks to the tourist trade, quite built up. For more traditional holiday home rentals and villas, you'll need to head west of Sete into the hills, near Pezenas or Clermont l'Herault. Prices here are also slightly cheaper, and you're more likely to find something with a garden and pool.
